Abstract
The introduction of automation for the assembly of aircraft wing box structures will require individual components to conform closely to the CAD design specification with regard to shape geometry and dimensional tolerances. Often, due to a variety of previous manufacturing processes, the 3D shape of these large components lose the accuracy of their designed dimensional specifications. Under these circumstances part‐to‐part assembly becomes tedious and it would be impossible to rely on robots to achieve precise assembly in an automated system. For this reason, variations need to be accurately quantified in order to provide a reliable prediction model in aid of any future automated assembly. This paper describes the measurement method used to record the possible variations occurring during the assembly process. The measurements were made using a laser tracker where the results are expected to offer some explanations as to the causes of the variation. The suitability of a laser tracker in a large assembly jig environment is then assessed. This study is based on the work that was carried out at BAE Systems UK, where the Airbus commercial aircraft wings are manufactured.

Abstract
Purpose
The riveting process is a metal forming process involving complex elastic-plastic deformation, which will induce a compressive residual stress field and cause local distortions in the connecting areas. Regarding to the aircraft panel assemblies with plenty of rivets, the global deformation is inevitable and undesired, leading difficulties to downstream assembly processes. This paper aims to present a new method for the local distortion calculation and the global deformation prediction of sheet panel assemblies during the automated riveting process.
Design/methodology/approach
In this paper, a simplified algebraic study is presented to analyze the local distortion of single countersunk rivet joint with the consideration of the barrel-like shape of the driven head and the through-thickness variations along the rivet shank. Then, an equivalent rivet unit is proposed based on the result of the algebraic study and embedded into the global-level model for the prediction of the overall distortions of riveted panels.
Findings
The algebraic study is able to reach a more precise contour of the deformed rivet than the traditional assumption of cylindrical deformations and rapidly determine the equivalent coefficients of the riveting unit. The result also shows an industrial acceptable accuracy of the prediction for the global deformations of the double-layered panel assemblies widely used in the aircraft panel structures.
Originality/value
A new local-global method for predicting the deformations of the riveted panel assembly based on the algebraic study of the local distortions is proposed to help the engineers in the early design stages or in the assembly process planning stage.

Abstract
Purpose
Drilling is an important operation in aircraft wing assembly. In order to enhance this operation, automated machines are used. The purpose of this paper is to propose an off‐line programming system to generate NC code effectively and accurately for a five‐axis NC drilling machine applied in aircraft wing flexible assembly.
Design/methodology/approach
The NC program is divided into three hierarchical parts to correspond, respectively, to the whole wing, single rib and single hole. The programming procedure for such three‐layer wing structures is detailed, which includes product model modification, NC program generation and post‐processing.
Findings
By demonstration, the implemented system is proved to increase the efficiency and correctness of NC programming, and the generated program performed well on a flexible wing drilling system.
Research limitations/implications
The system can only program for automated drilling machine at present, however with further development both automated drilling and riveting machine in aircraft wing assembly can be programmed by this system. Another development might make this system universal for different machineries and other aircraft components.
Originality/value
The paper indicates a new way to program for rapid wing flexible drilling, and the generated NC program is more adaptable and easier to update for various aircraft wing structures.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to increase the measurement accuracy of assembly deviations of an inertial navigation system, a new evaluation and optimal method of assembly metrology system is proposed, which takes into account the uncertainty from laser tracker hardware and coordinate system transformation, and is based on the Monte Carlo method.
Design/methodology/approach
The uncertainty model of the laser tracker is established and its parameters are obtained from the known repeated test data by kriging interpolation and the least squares method. The errors of coordinate transformation are reduced by using a weighted point matching method, and the uncertainty of the transformation parameters is obtained based on the generalized inverse theory. The weighting coefficients of each reference point are optimized by the particle swarm optimization method according to the assembly requirements.
Findings
The experiment results show that measurement error and predicted results match well, and the assembly deviation uncertainty of large component is reduced by about 10 per cent compared with the singular value decomposition method.
Originality/value
This paper proposes a method to evaluate and eliminate the influence of random errors of the laser tracker during evaluation process of coordinate translation parameters and assembly deviations. The proposed method would be useful to improve the assembly measurement accuracy through less measurement times.

Abstract
Purpose
The purpose of this paper is to propose a posture evaluation approach based on temperature compensation and three-dimensional (3-D) tolerance for the key points (KPs).
Design/methodology/approach
A large component 3-D compensation model of thermal deformation considering characteristics of the assembly object is developed. Then, the thermal deformation compensation model is used to modify the nominal coordinates for the KPs. By using a combination of relative deviations of KPs as the objective and 3-D tolerance as the constraints, an optimization model for posture evaluation is established.
Findings
Deviations of posture and KPs’ coordinates are obtained by solving the non-linear constrained optimization problem. The posture evaluation method is demonstrated in both a simulation case and practical implication of the aircraft components assembly system with the result that a good performance is obtained.
Practical implications
The proposed method has been used in several aircraft assembly projects in China, and gained a good effect.
Originality/value
This paper proposes a method for eliminating the affection of thermal deformation during posture evaluation process and improving the consistency and stability of posture evaluation results. The results of this research will help to systematically improve the manufacturing process and tolerance allocation efficiency in large aircraft assembly.

A successful TQM implementation need sufficient education and training, supportive leadership, consistent support of top management, customer focus, employee involvement, process management and continuous improvement of processes.
Research limitations/implications
The review was limited to articles written in English language during the past 30 years.
Practical implications
From a practical point of view, the findings of this paper provide managers with a practical understanding of the factors that are likely to facilitate TQM implementation in organisations.
Originality/value
Understanding the factors that are likely to promote TQM implementation would enable managers to develop more effective strategies that will enhance the chances of achieving business excellence.

Sociology promotes and describes public health, helping to explain macro-social dynamics of mental health care through studies of organizations, networks, and systems of care.
Methodology/approach
This chapter summarizes sociological research on mental health care organizations and systems, illustrating a macro-social perspective by examining the problem of transitions in care for young adults. Summary findings from a regional mental health services research project describe a system of care that includes 100 organizations. This system helps young adults with mental health needs.
Findings
The scope and management of care involves a focus on modes of treatment supported by research evidence and delivered effectively by people with cultural competencies. Care and continuity of care are delivered through coordinated systems of inter-organizational networks, linking organizations and providers. Active inter-organizational linkages are needed to support mental health for young adults during challenging and sometimes difficult transitions.
Originality/value
This research summarizes original and regional data on mental health care organizations within a regional system of care. Practical implications include support for the importance of coordination, transition planning, and cultural competence within and among organizations. Sociological and original research on organizations and systems should continue to elaborate the needs and values of mental health services for regional planning and public health.

Abstract
Purpose
This study sought to identify the organizational factors associated with team and network effectiveness of the Athena Breast Health Network, a multi-site collaboration between five University of California health systems.
Design/methodology/approach
Providers, managers, and support staff completed self-administered surveys over three years. Statistical analyses at the network and medical center levels tested hypotheses regarding the correlates of effective teams and perceived network effectiveness over time.
Findings
Perceived team effectiveness was positively correlated with group culture and environments which support collaboration, negatively correlated with hierarchical culture, and negatively associated with professional tenure at year two. As measured by increasing team effectiveness scores over time and Athena’s potential impact on patient care, perceived network effectiveness was positively associated with team effectiveness.
Research limitations/implications
Results do not allow us to conclude that a certain type of culture “causes” team effectiveness or that team effectiveness “causes” greater perceptions of progress over time. Subsequent studies should examine these variables simultaneously. Further research is needed to examine the role of payment incentives, internal reward systems, the use of electronic health records, public disclosure of performance data, and depth of leadership within each organization and within the network overall.
Practical implications
Focusing on group affiliation and participation may improve team member perceptions regarding effectiveness and impact on patient care.
Originality/value
Relatively little is known about the adaptive processes that occur within inter-organizational networks to achieve desired goals, and particularly the roles played by multi-disciplinary inter-professional teams. We studied a network comprising multiple campuses actively involved in better understanding, preventing, and treating a complex disease.

Abstract
Purpose
This report provides information on the cultural environment of professionals concerned with disability, and the implications of that environment for the inclusion and participation of disabled persons in society. We place that environment within an historical context sensitive to the role of power and the constructed nature of the social world to illustrate the importance of cultural environments for understanding factors shaping inclusion of disabled persons.
Design/methodology/approach
We use data from coding terms used in the Review of Educational Research for nearly 80 years to examine the cultural environment of professionals concerned with disabilities and suggest such an environment may characterize many professions and the social sciences generally. We examine 23 terms used in academic discourse to refer to disabled populations, tracking change in use of the terms over 80 years.
Findings
There has been increased attention to disability from the 1930s to the early 2000s. The increase has been accompanied by a decline in use of terms undermining the dignity and capability of disabled persons, and an increase in terms providing a context for dignity and capability. Such changes suggest a cultural environment propitious for inclusion and participation of disabled and disadvantaged persons.
Social implications
Implications are considered through a model noting the role of a positive cultural environment in shaping inclusion and participation of disabled populations. The model suggests the power and limitations of cultural environments, while at the same time noting the role of countervailing processes hindering greater inclusion and participation.

This paper aims to present a method for predicting dimensional variation in assembly processes of a wingbox structure concentrating on the assembly of skin panels to rib feet.
Design/methodology/approach
Finite element modelling and experimental tests are conducted on the rib structure based on the site measurement gathered from the Airbus assembly factory.
Findings
The results have shown that the simulated model has the capability of predicting to an acceptable degree of accuracy the overall geometrical variations of the ribs and skin panels, as well as the positional variations of each individual rib foot.
Originality/value
The authors believe that no previous research has offered a similar prediction method for large aerostructures.
